When I was at the hospital, I saw a girl and her father coming out of surgery. I had seen the girl before, a year earlier and the contrast was horrifying.

I did fix the third stanza, second line. The original didn’t rhyme for some reason. I assume that was intentional at the time, but for consistency sake, I changed it.

This is an old poem I took out of a notebook ages ago. This dates back to before I was married and had only a cursory knowledge of women. My personal experience has expanded and these days I agree with you — men can be just as strange sometimes. I am fortunate to be married to somebody who does not fit the woman or the man in the poem. You can thank Chronus McGee for the recovery of this fine little ditty. If you examine the lines carefully, you will see that the man is just as guilty of bad behavior and that his torment has an underlying cause beyond mere hormonal ones. Finally, it is humor. I have met a number of men whose names could be put in the woman’s without changing the sense too much. I once had a lieutenant who screamed whenever he didn’t get his way and believe me, that was a great deal worse than any OTR experience I ever encountered.
